‘Destination’ Print by Blair Waterfield

Blair Waterfield grew up in Sydney and came to printmaking through a 2001 scholarship invitation to study at the National Art School — a competitive entry program that placed him among the most promising emerging practitioners of his generation. Printmaking took hold immediately. In 2006 he moved to Tasmania to deepen his practice at the University of Tasmania's School of Art, completing his Bachelor of Fine Art in 2008 and his Masters in Printmaking in 2010 at the Tasmanian School of Creative Arts.

He has since established himself as one of Tasmania's most distinctive contemporary printmakers, with a body of work spanning multiple solo and group exhibitions across Australia. His practice draws on the richness of the printmaking tradition. The physicality of the process, the relationship between pressure and surface, and the particular quality of mark that printmaking produces while pushing consistently toward his own visual language. The work is warm, considered, and immediately accessible without sacrificing the depth that rewards sustained attention.

Three of Waterfield's works hang at The Royale — 'Destination', 'Birds of a Feather', and 'The Flower Pot Man' — making The Royale the most concentrated single location for his work in any accommodation in Tasmania.

About 'Destination'

Artwork: Destination Artist: Blair Waterfield Medium: Printmaking Displayed at:The Royale, Hobart CBD

'Destination' captures the feeling of arriving somewhere that matters. The title carries both a literal and emotional register — the end point of a journey, and the particular quality of attention that comes from knowing you are exactly where you meant to be. For a property built around the experience of arriving somewhere worth staying, the work sits with an almost programmatic rightness. It does not announce itself. It simply belongs in the room.

As the first of three Waterfield works at The Royale, 'Destination' introduces the warmth and directness that runs through his practice. Viewed alongside 'Birds of a Feather' and 'The Flower Pot Man', the three works together reveal the full tonal range of what Waterfield brings — from the grounded arrival of 'Destination' to the natural world of 'Birds of a Feather' to the quiet humour of 'The Flower Pot Man'.
